Trinity Western University's comeback bid came up one goal shy as the Spartans men's hockey team nearly rallied from a four-goal deficit before falling 4-3 against Red Deer College (ACAC) in preseason action on Sunday afternoon.
TWU fell behind 4-0, but after a goal from Cody Stephenson, the Spartans started chipping away at the Kings lead. In the third period, Dawson Sawatzky scored on the power play to get TWU within two goals before Evan Last made it a one-goal game late. A frenetic last few minutes saw TWU earn a number of chances, but the Spartans were unable to find the tying marker.
Silas Matthys started the game before giving way to first-year Lucas Mills midway through the contest.
"I thought the guys really showed well in the third period and we got some momentum that we can build from," said Spartans coach Barret Kropf. "Red Deer has a great program and they have a solid team this year. It's tough not coming home with a win, but I think we'll return with our heads held high knowing that we competed well and represented the school well."
The Spartans also lost to Red Deer on Saturday, falling 3-0.
The Spartans are back on the ice Sept. 24 when they will play Simon Fraser at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby, B.C.
