Zack Wear made 45 saves -- including 21 during a frenetic third period -- to lift the University of Victoria to a 5-1 home ice win over Simon Fraser University and split the two-game weekend series between the teams.
The Vikes took an early lead on a Shawn Mueller goal and held on until they tripled their advantage with a pair of late second period markers from Carsen Willans and Patrick Webb in the span of 36 seconds.
Willans and SFU's Tyler Basham exchanged goals midway through the third before Mueller capped the scoring on an individual effort with 44 seconds remaining in regulation.
While the Vikes offence found their stride, they also leaned heavily on a top-notch effort from Wear. The rookie netminder stopped all 24 shots he faced in the first and second periods before allowing SFU's lone goal during a 22-shot third period barrage.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for UVic, who now sport a 3-6-0-1 record and a three-point lead on Eastern Washington for the BCIHL's fourth and final playoff spot. SFU, meanwhile, sits in a tie with TWU for second with a 5-4-0-0 record.
On Friday, Jamie Waddington broke a second period deadlock with his first BCIHL goal en route to a 4-1 SFU win in the weekend opener.
Jono Ceci and Patrick Webb had traded goals during the first half of the game, but the Clan broke things open late with a pair of goals in the final 3:37 of regulation.
Jordan Liem picked up the win in net for SFU with 30 saves.
