Eastern Washington University is pleased to announce a playing commitment from forward Matt Lucero (North Vancouver, BC) for the 2015/16 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.
Lucero, who stands 5-foot-11 and weighs in at 180 pounds, will join the Eagles after finishing his junior career with the Grand Forks Border Bruins of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Lucero split three KIJHL seasons between Grand Forks and the Revelstoke Grizzlies, appearing in 99 games while posting 23 goals, 27 assists, and 159 penalty minutes.
Lucero’s time spent in Grand Forks allowed the EWU coaching staff to see him play during numerous trips to Spokane.
"We saw Matt play a lot during the year as we watched games and when we discovered he had dual citizenship we were able to give him some assistance when it came to tuition," said Eagles GM Bill Shaw.
Lucero’s interest in EWU extends beyond hockey as he intends to enter the field of Physical Therapy. EWU’s health science programs offer undergraduate degrees in exercise science and athletic training as well as Pre-PT which feeds to the Doctorate of Physical Therapy at EWU.
"We liked what we saw in Matt’s game and our background work and talking to others that have seen him play only cemented our feelings," says EWU associate coach Pat Hanlon. "We feel Matt should be able to transition to the BCIHL quickly and play a regular role as a freshman.”
The addition of Lucero makes him the Eagles 5th official commitment.
