Trinity Western University continues to roll as it knocked off Eastern Washington by a 6-3 score to earn its seventh straight win on Friday evening at the Langley Events Centre.
After taking a 2-1 first period lead, the Spartans exploded for three goals in the second to help the home side to its fourth consecutive win by three goals or more. The win improves TWU to 15-2-0-2 while the loss drops EWU to 5-14.
PJ Buys paced TWU by tallying his first hat-trick as a Spartan while also adding an assist for his third four-point outing of the season. Jamey Kreller, Grange Gordon and Mattias Schmitt also scored for the Spartans.
Eastern Washington’s Paxton Bell had two goals and John Vant had one. TWU goalie Aaron Oakley made 22 saves to record the win. The Eagles Austin Brihn stopped 32 of the 38 shots he faced in the loss.
“From a systems standpoint, I think we’re doing a good job,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf. “The guys are starting to get it figured out. I know that seems weird to say at this point in the season, but there has definitely been some good buy-in over the last couple of weeks in terms of our system play. It’s almost to the point where it doesn’t matter who we have in the lineup. We can just roll."
“I think it was good for Oakes to build some confidence and for the guys to build confidence in him. At this point, we’re just making sure we don’t have a bad habits creep in. Even though we have a lot of confidence as a team right now, it’s guarded confidence. Our guys are trusting each other and they have each other’s backs and that comes with confidence.”
After a scoreless first 16 minutes of the opening frame, the Spartans scored twice in 45 seconds to take a 2-0 lead. Kreller opened the scoring at 14:06 before Buys doubled TWU’s lead at 14:49. However, on a late power play, Bell scored on a snapshot off the rush with three seconds left in the period, beating Oakley to the top right corner.
In the second period, the Spartans took over. Less than seven minutes into the period, Gordon deflected a point shot past Brihn to restore TWU’s two-goal edge. Then, 55 seconds later, Schmitt pounced on a rebound off a Buys shot and slipped it through the Eagles netminder to make it 4-1.
Buys rounded out TWU’s second period scoring with a solo effort that saw him dangle through the Eagles defence and finish the play with an in-tight shot that beat Brihn.
Vant made it a 5-2 game with a power play marker midway through the third period. Then with 3:58 left in the game, Buys scored his third of the game when he converted a cross-crease pass from Cody Fidgett off the rush.
Bell scored with 40 seconds left to give EWU its third goal of the game.
“From Eastern’s end of the rink, they have some good pieces over there,” Kropf said. “I know they’ve taken a few on the chin lately, but they have some good players and they’re a hard-working team and hopefully they don’t get discouraged with that they have going on there.”
The Spartans return to the ice next weekend when they travel to play Victoria Feb. 6-7. Eastern Washington is back in action Saturday when it will play at Simon Fraser at 7 p.m.
Game Notes: TWU was 0 for 4 on the power play while EWU was 2 for 5…the Spartans haven’t lost in regulation since Oct. 31, 2014 when they fell to Victoria 3-1.
