Playing in a rematch of last year’s BCIHL championship series, Trinity Western University were unable to keep up with Selkirk College as the Spartans dropped a 9-0 decision in preseason action Friday at Cominco Arena in Trail.
The Spartans trailed 2-0 after the first period, but in the final 40 minutes the floodgates opened. The two-time defending BCIHL champion Saints poured in seven more goals en route to the exhibition win.
“We took one on the chin tonight and it’s obvious that Selkirk is not rebuilding – they’ve reloaded,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf. “They’re a really good hockey team that played well under their new coach. They outskated us. They outhit us. They outworked us. They’re going to be a team that’s going to be tough to match on any occasion. Hats off to them for being ready to play tonight."
“The good thing about it is that it’s an exhibition game and we get the chance to reload without it counting against us in the stats.”
The Spartans were outshot 51-22.
The Spartans will now travel to Castlegar, B.C., where they will play Eastern Washington Saturday at 7 p.m.
