Simon Fraser University may not have taken the easiest route to the 2010 BCIHL Championship Game, but the regular season's first place finishers got the job done in the end with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.
Following a scoreless first period that featured a number of scoring chances but impressive play from both netminders, TRU opened the scoring on a second period power play when Kevin Hanna found Casy Patterson cruising through the slot and had his pass converted past Justin Mulholland. The period closed with SFU coming close but failing to connect ona two-man advantage.
Simon Fraser came out strong in the final 20 minutes, however, and tied the game when defenceman Chris Chan beat Blake Tancock with a wrist shot from the right circle off a faceoff win. SFU kept coming and tied the game minutes later when Jas Rai was sent in alone on Tancock off a nice passing play from Bill Smith and Jackson Friesen. Rai faked a backhand deke before beating the WolfPack netminder with a wrist shot just inside the post.
Thompson Rivers had three power-play chances down the stretch but were shut down by Mulholland, who made 28 saves on the evening in what proved to be a goaltender's dual. Shortly after killing their final penalty of the game, the SFU bench erupted at the final buzzer.
