Simon Fraser University is pleased to announce a commitment from Richmond Sockeyes captain Matt Brown for the 2019/20 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League seeason.
Brown is a 6-foot-3 defenceman from Richmond who played four seasons with the Sockeyes, appearing 93 games and totalling 36 points and 294 penalty minutes. Brown also played in 47 BCHL games with the Surrey Eagles during his junior career.
The 20-year old plays a defensively sound game and brings significant size and grit to the SFU lineup. He prides himself on a good first pass, having a team-first leadership quality and prefers to lead by example. He joins 2019/20 recruit Jake Keremmidshieff from the 2018/19 Sockeyes squad, as well as second year forward Arjun Badh from their 2017/18 Cyclone Taylor Cup winning team.
The Richmond native will enter SFU's Criminology program and plans on pursuing a career in policing.
Brown is the seventh commitment for the 2019/20 season following forwards Ty Westgard (Coquitlam, BCHL) and Justin Lee (North Van, PJHL) as well as defencemen Jordan Dawson (Nanaimo, BCHL), Matt Krawiec (Red Lake, SIJHL), Jake Keremidschieff (Richmond, PJHL) and Adamu Tanaka (Calgary, AJHL).
SFU takes on TWU and UBC for the 2019 Captain’s Cup in September prior to kicking off the 2019/20 BCIHL season in October. Additional announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
