The British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League has unveiled its award winners for the month of November/December 2018:
Player of the Month – Blake Holowaty, University of Victoria
A first-year player for UVic, Holowaty led all BCIHL scorers in league games during November and December, tallying two goals and six assists in seven games. He had points in all but one of the Vikes games from Nov. 2 – Dec. 1, including a one goal, two assist effort on November 30 against Trinity Western University. The 21-year-old Summerland Steam alumnus is now ninth in BCIHL scoring, second among all rookies in scoring and tops on the University of Victoria.
Defenceman of the Month – Brayden McCartney, Selkirk College
Now in his second BCIHL season with the Saints, McCartney is a key contributor on the Selkirk College blueline. The 22-year-old from Campbell River, BC posted five assists in six games during November and December. He started the month with back-to-back two assist games against the University of Victoria and added an assist against Trinity Western on November 17. The former Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League veteran has now equalled his point total from 2017-18 in half as many games.
Goaltender of the Month – Tallon Kramer, Selkirk College
Kramer’s performance as the fall semester wound down sparked the Saints to a third-place finish heading into the second half of the season. The 22-year-old Grande Prairie, Alberta product went 3-1 during November – December with a 2.26 goals-against-average and a .935 save percentage, along with being named first star three times and third star once. He gave up more than two goals just once between Nov. 2 and Dec. 2. The Beaver Valley Nitehawks alumnus is currently third overall in GAA and second in the BCIHL in SV% this season.
Rookie of the Month – Spencer Gerth, Trinity Western University
The 20-year-old veteran of 183 Western Hockey League has had a big impact in his first BCIHL season. Gerth was only held off the scoresheet three times in eight games in November and December, racking up three goals and four assists. His best efforts came on November 16 when he had a goal and an assist and was named third star in a 4-2 loss to Selkirk College. He repeated the feat on November 23 in an 8-1 win over UVic. His eight points in 12 games puts the Everett Silvertips grad sits first among all rookies in scoring on the Spartans.
