Trinity Western University will attempt to grow their lead atop the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League standings when they play two regular season home games this weekend, as the first-place Spartans host Simon Fraser University on Thursday night and the University of Victoria on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans will look to keep their momentum rolling this weekend as they enter the weekend riding a nine-game winning streak. Spartans forward Florian Niedermaier scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Saturday night, and is now tied with alum Josh MacKnee for the TWU career lead in goals, at 30.
Brayden Brown and Evan Last are tied for second in the league with 21 points, while Spartans goaltender Silas Matthys was named the BCIHL’s ANYTHING BRANDED Player of the Week this past week after making 77 saves while leading TWU to back-to-back road wins over Selkirk.
Matthys is leading the league in all goaltending categories this weekend, including wins, goals-against-average and save percentage.
SFU enters Thursday's match-up on a hot streak of their own, as the third-place Clan has won their last three games. Mac Colasimone is the team’s point leader, with three goals and 12 assists.
The Spartans lead the season series over SFU by a 2-1 margin. After losing their first meeting of the season by a 4-2 score, TWU bounced back with a 4-3 decision on home ice in November and a 3-2 road victory in their final game of 2017.
Meanwhile, the Vikes are looking to keep their postseason hopes above water following a slow start to the 2017/18 season. The Vkes currently trail fourth place VIU by seven points for the league's final postseason berth.
Forward Jack Palmer leads the fifth-place Vikes in scoring with three goals and 14 points in 13 games.
The Spartans and Vikes have met twice this season with TWU getting the best of both contests, a 6-3 road win in Victoria on October 6 and an 11-1 blowout win at home two weeks later.
Thursday night's contest is set for a 7:00 PM faceoff while Saturday's matinee against UVic is set for a 1:00 PM start.
