The B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League's two island-based clubs found themselves on opposite ends of the spectrum as 2017 came to an end. On the one hand, Vancouver Island University exceeded all outside expectations in posting a .500 record through 12 games. On the other, the defending champs from the University of Victoria stalled out of the gates and closed out the semester seven points shy of a playoff berth.
Both teams will open their 2018 schedules this weekend with home games against Simon Fraser University beginning Friday when the Clan visit the Ian Stewart Complex in Victoria.
The Vikes will begin to make their playoff push with a major addition up front as left winger Austin Wellsby has joined the team. The Kelowna product is a veteran of 164 Western Hockey League games, all with the Kootenay Ice. He picked up six goals and 18 points in 60 regular season games for the Cranbrook-based club last season and had a short stint with the BCHL's Chilliwack Chiefs in September before heading to school.
Victoria will hope that Wellsby adds production to a group that is thirsty for offence, as the trio of Jack Palmer, Brandon Volpe and Liam Shaw accounted for more than half the points picked up by Vikes skaters in their first 12 games.
The Clan, meanwhile, will be looking for a hot start to begin the new year after dropping three of four games to close out 2017. Last season's regular season champs have had trouble finding their top level on a consistent basis so far this season and find themselves well back of Trinity Western and Selkirk College heading down the stretch.
SFU will also feature a big addition in the form of returning forward Robert Iszak, who spent the fall playing professionally with Norwegian club team Furuset. The Maple Ridge native picked up four goals and 11 points in 21 games with the Clan last season.
On Saturday, Simon Fraser will conclude their trip in Nanaimo against a VIU squad that currently sits level with them in the standings.
The Mariners closed out their pre-Christmas schedule on a high note, taking down league leaders Selkirk College by a 6-4 score on home ice on December 2nd. That game featured what has become known as the expansion club's recipe for success: start with some Gage Colpron and add Garrett Dunlop as necessary. The team's scoring leaders combined for three goals and five points in that contest and have 19 points between them in VIU's last five games.
In goal, VIU will need backup Brett Clark to take on more responsibility following the departure of starter Carson Schamerhorn. Clark is a former BCHL and SJHL netminder with over 50 games of Junior A experience under his belt, but he posted a 6.47 GAA and .839 SV% in four appearances before the break.
Friday's game in Victoria is scheduled for a 7:30 PM faceoff while Saturday's contest in Nanaimo is set for an 8:00 PM start. Both games will be broadcast live on Hockey TV.
